RAMON LLULL

Ramon Llull School is named after Ramon Llull, who is the most universal Majorcan person that has existed until today. He is considered the greatest figure in our literature, our mysticism and our philosophy.

Ramon Llull was the son of a noble Catalan family, that settled in Majorca after taking part in the conquest of the island by King James I of Aragon in 1229-30.

He was born in Majorca in 1232 and in 125, he married Blanca Picany White, with whom he had two children: Domínec and Magdalena.

He tutored the young Prince James, son of King James I the Conqueror, and later became seneschal (the administrative head of the royal household) to the future James II of Majorca, a relative of his wife. During this time he led a courteous and gallant life and wrote poems about mystical passionate love.

In the year 1263 there was a radical change in his life, comparable to that of St. Paul, St. Augustine or San Francisco.

He learned Arabic, studied theology at Santa Maria de la Real, situated at the north of Palma. He retires to Puig the Randa, situated on the southern part of Majorca, in the municipality of Algaida, where he dedicates himself to meditation and where he had the experience of a divine revelation. He founded a missionary school at the Monastery of Miramar, in Valldemossa. He also made many pilgrimages and tours to Compostela, Barcelona, Montpellier, Perpignan, Paris, Rome, Genoa, Tunis, Naples, Cyprus, America, Bugia, Pisa, Sicily, Holy Land, ...

There is a tradition that assumes that Ramon Llull was stoned by Muslims and a Genoese ship picked him up and brought him back to Mallorca. When he came to the island, Ramon Llull died with the image of the island of Majorca in his eyes.

His tomb and belongings are in the convent of San Francisco in Palma.

The result of this intense literary life are the two hundred forty-three works. Notable among them are  "Tree Escientiae" (Tree of Knowledge), "New Logic", "Ars Magna", "Book of Contemplation", "Book of Evast and Blaquerna", "Book of Wonders", "Book of the Beasts "," Book of the Lover and the Beloved ", and so on.

These works were written in Latin, Arabic and / or Catalan.

Thanks to Ramon Llull, Catalan was the first neo-Latin language used to express his philosophical, scientific and technical findings. He also used Catalan in many of his works, being the creator of a literary Catalan language. Thus, he is considered the first Catalan writer who elevated this language to the scientific category, giving it a great cultural level.
