Our founder, Don Sebastian Gili Vives

Sebastian was born in 1811 in Sa Carbona (Arta), third son of farmers Gili i Miquel Antonia Beds and Vives i Artigues, who educated him in a Christian environment.

In 1826 he went to the Luliana University of Majorca and got a scholarship to study at the Seminary in 1830, the same year his father died. On April 4, 1835 he was ordained priest and was sent to the Parish of St. James of Palma of Majorca, where he arrived on July 2, 1835.

From 1844-1866 he served as administrator, prior and director of the Hospice and Foundling in Palma, where there were 250 foundlings. He also directed the General Hospital and the House of Mercy. In 1858 he became an Augustinian tertiary and worked to found a religious congregation. On December 4 he published the Sisters of Refuge of the Third Order of St. Augustine statues. This congregation was devoted to charity and care for the sick and needy in foundling hospitals and hospices. On February 6, 1859, four sisters began community life.

In 1860, the former convent of ‘Ses Mongetes’,the present day residence of the Augustinian nuns located in Josep Maria Square, was ceded to the congregation. They were responsible for the Hospital Care and Home Care in Palma. In 1863, they were also involved in the House of Mercy. On April 8, 1864, the bishop of Majorca named Gili superior of the congregation, which was growing. In 1865, he ran a school, entering so the field of education.

In 1867, the Administrator  and the Ibiza Charity Council requested the Augustinian sisters services at the hospital in Ibiza. Permission granted, on September 2, 1868 Gili Sebastian moved with four Sisters and formed a community in Ibiza. In 1875, Our Lady of Consolation School was open.

On July 30, 1883, Gili was appointed canon of the Cathedral of Palma, a position that he combined with one as superior of the congregation until 1893. Due to his advanced age, he presented his resignation as a superior and was succeeded by Father Francisco Arrom . Retired in Arta, he died on September 11, 1894.
